Four courses*, three of which must be taken sequentially, completion of the phonics requirement, and an acceptable score on the "Introduction to the Teaching of Reading" subtest of the Praxis II exam are required for Ohio Endorsement of Standard Certficate for Reading. (The test can be taken after coursework has been completed and is not a prerequisite for admission to the program. )

Theory & Practice, Diagnosis & Remediation, and the Clinical Practicum must be taken in correct order/sequence.
If previous coursework does not include a phonics course or its equivalent, students must take MCED 50005: Effective Use of Phonics in Reading.

The "Introduction to the Teaching of Reading" Specialty Area Test
of the Praxis II
The Ohio Department of Education requires the "Introduction to the Teaching of Reading" specialty area test of the Praxis II examination for the Reading Endorsement. Most students take this test after their coursework is completed. Please note that KSU cannot process a request to the State of Ohio for the Reading Endorsement without test scores.
To Enroll in the Reading Endorsement
- Go to http://www.kent.edu/admissions/apply/
- Check "Special Non-Degree" for Reading Endorsement only or "Master of Education" for the Master's Degree. If you are selecting the Master's degree, write in "Reading Specialization" as your major. (The GRE is not required for those enrolling in the Endorsement or Master's Degree in Reading Specialization.)
